A bit of background.

The recruitment process is ever-changing, companies are getting ever more aggressive in their bid to win the war on talent and hire the best people into their organisations. Many of those businesses are deciding to further ‘up the ante’ when it comes to quickly identifying the necessary skills required to succeed in this digital age.

SOCIAL SCORING is now being used by employers.

What is Social Scoring?

Social Scoring is a score generated through the measure of people and their level of social influence. Notably, the scoring algorithm doesn’t just look at the number of followers you’ve amassed, it’s also viewing other metrics such as activity, posts, readership, likes, shares etc to create a more holistic score.

Employers are using the LinkedIn Social Selling Index (SSI) and also turning to social scoring companies like Klout, Kred, Reppify to socially score applicants.

Why?

It’s been generally agreed that around 80% of customers and employees are more likely to trust a company whose leadership team are active on social media.

In addition, for many job positions, a candidate who has a pre-existing network and reputation within their given industry, is necessary to bring success to that role e.g. sales.

Employers will, therefore, create a benchmark social score threshold as a prerequisite to hiring.

 

What can you do today to get better prepared?

  • Don’t overstretch yourself – If your time is limited, focus on one or two social sites. LinkedIn and Twitter are typically used the most by business professionals.
  • Keep your profile up to date – Ensure your profiles are as complete as possible, basic or incomplete profiles tend to get a significantly less engagement from prospective clients, colleagues and employers.
  • Share content – Aim to find and share relevant and engaging content with your network, this will help get you recognised as a contributor and encourage active network participation.
  • Actively grow your own network – Growing your sphere of influence takes time, so try to connect with new people often, whilst not neglecting your existing connections.
  • Be selective over who comes into your network – Keep your network relevant to what you do by only sending or accepting connection requests to/from industry peers. 
  • Participate in discussionsIf you see a post or comment thread in your newsfeed that you like or have opinions about, get involved in that active discussion.
  • Build personal relationships – Take the time to build personal relationships with those in your network by sending messages, asking questions and taking an active interest in their expertise.

 

Remember – There’s no quick fix, building a network and growing a social score takes time and effort, but the rewards in doing so are obvious.
